Very good condition in a poor but complete (and scarce) DW. Jacket chipped at edges, browned on spine and with the front joint entirely split (jacket in 2 pieces), horizontal split on spine.

A very unusual binding; it appears to have the cover title and a sketch on the upper board, but this image has been overlaid with a semi-transparent wrap of vellum-like paper, under which the red ribbon ties were inserted. The images are barely visible under this lamination. A tale about two friars and their pact with the Devil. BAL 5771. Scarce. Near fine sans DW as issued. The envelope containing the fold-out facsimile manuscript is torn on the bottom, and three pages near the front, including the tissue-paper frontispiece protector, have a small dampstain at the top. A similar small dampstain is on the bottom of the rear cover. Overall, in very nice condition.

This is one of ten presentation copies, in a handmade laser-engraved solid oak box, and bound in red cloth instead of black. The book is completely hand made, from the engraving of original artwork on wood to the hand pulling of each print and finally to the hand sewing and casing of each book. George Walker engraves each image by hand onto the end grain of maple and boxwood blocks. The engravings were printed on a Vandercook SP15 Proof Press. Sheets of paper are feed into the press by hand; the inking system is electric. Some of the type they use is handset wood and led type (the old movable type style). This type of printing is known as letterpress. These books are hand sewn with linen thread. This is the strongest thread and provides for a superior book. Fine in slipcase and carved wooden box.
