Burland, Brian Stephen Decatur: The Devil and the Endymion 1975 George Allen & Unwin UK. First edition. Signed by the author on the title page and dated 28 Nov 87. Includes over 70 holographic corrections in the author's hand, perhaps for a second edition (which never materialized). 128pp. plus a map on the endpapers. This is an exciting historical novel set around the exploits of Stephen Decatur (1779-1820), a United States naval officer and commodore notable for his many naval victories in the early 19th century. It is 1815, and he is running the blockade that the British have maintained on the eastern seaboard of America. But the US Frigate 'President' is a ship of ill omen to him, built parsimoniously of fir and which, the previous night, has been run aground and crippled by an incompetent pilot. Fine.

Nivedita, Sister and Ananda K. Coomaraswamy Myths and Legends: Hindus and Buddhists n.d. David D. Nickerson and Company Boston. Number 440 of 1000, the Foundation Edition. Top edge gilt. 25 color plates. Rare. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Sister Nivedita, born Margaret Noble in County Tyrone, was among the key British writers on Hinduism. Noble travelled to India in 1898 to become a disciple of Swami Vivekananda, the Hindu thinker and the founder of the Ramakrishna mission, "one of a number of movements created within Hinduism in the nineteenth century" (ODNB). In 1900, she founded a school for girls in Calcutta, on which she spent most of her assets. She died in 1911 with her Myths of the Hindus & Buddhists about a third finished, leaving it to be completed by Ananda K. Coomaraswamy, an English-educated art historian of Tamil origin who was, by his death in 1947, "recognized internationally as a leading Indologist, art critic, historian, and linguist". Front board just starting to separate, spine somewhat faded, else very good.
